About Dr. Shivakumar Shamarao

• Dr. Shivakumar Shamarao is an accomplished Pediatrician and Pediatric Intensivist.
• His expertise covers a wide range of paediatric critical care areas, including paediatric invasive and non-invasive ventilation, paediatric solid organ (liver and kidney) and bone marrow transplant care, neurocritical care, post-surgical intensive care, extracorporeal therapy (CRRT, plasma exchange), and paediatric ECMO management.
• With an exceptional academic and clinical background, he has been instrumental in developing advanced paediatric intensive care systems and protocols, establishing himself as a leader in critical paediatric care and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) management.
• Dr. Shamarao earned his MBBS from Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College and Research Centre, under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in Pathology.
• He pursued his DNB (Pediatrics) from the renowned Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Chennai, and was recognised as the Best Junior Resident in Pediatrics during his training at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi, in 2001.
• His specialised training in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine includes both Indian and international fellowships.
• Dr. Shamarao completed the IAP Fellowship in Paediatric Intensive Care (IDPCCM) from Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, securing First Rank at the national level fellowship examination in 2007.
• He then underwent extensive overseas training in Paediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care, and Children’s Acute Transport Service at globally acclaimed institutions, the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, London (UK), and the Hospital for SickKids, Toronto (Canada).
• A passionate educator, Dr. Shamarao serves as the Fellowship Program Director for the IAP Fellowship in Paediatric Critical Care, IDPCCN (Indian Diploma in Paediatric Critical Care Nursing), and DrNB Paediatric Critical Care at Manipal Hospital.
• His leadership and mentorship have contributed significantly to building the next generation of paediatric intensivists in India.
• Dr. Shamarao is also deeply involved in research and academic contributions, with several national and international publications in high-impact journals covering topics such as paediatric infectious diseases, sleep-disordered breathing, ECMO outcomes, and antimicrobial resistance.
• He is a prominent member of leading professional bodies, including the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), IAP Intensive Care Chapter, Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), and the ECMO Society of India, where he serves as Secretary of the Paediatric Section.
