About Dr. Puneet Dhar

• Dr. Puneet Dhar is an eminent Surgical Gastroenterologist with over 30 years of experience in managing complex gastrointestinal diseases and advancing the field of GI surgery in India.
• After completing his MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College, University of Delhi, he pursued his MS in General Surgery at Safdarjung Hospital, University of Delhi.
• He later achieved his MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology from GB Pant Hospital, University of Delhi, which was the first MCI-recognized center for the super-specialty in India.
• Dr. Dhar also completed a Fellowship in Transplant Surgery at Addenbrooke’s NHS Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals Trust, UK, where he later served as a consultant.
• Following his training, Dr. Dhar worked as a Specialist at GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi (1992–1998), before taking on a leadership role at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, where he established and developed one of the largest and most advanced GI surgery centers in the country.
• He later moved to AIIMS Rishikesh, where he served as Professor and Head of the Department, as well as the Dean of Student Welfare, and was instrumental in setting up the institution’s Department of Surgical Gastroenterology.
• Dr. Dhar has been a prolific academician, with numerous research publications, book chapters, and contributions as an editorial board member and reviewer for several reputed journals.
• He is also a highly respected teacher, having organized CMEs, medical conferences, and online teaching modules.
• His efforts extend to the National Board of Examinations, where he serves as the Webinar Coordinator, and he has held governing positions, including membership of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Governing Body.
• Beyond clinical and academic medicine, Dr. Dhar has contributed to medical and social causes through his association with the Amrita Math and Rotary International, where he coordinated relief efforts during the Kerala floods and was recognized for his leadership.
• He has also championed medical humanities, surgical research, and antimicrobial stewardship, integrating these into modern surgical practice.
• Dr. Dhar is currently the President-Elect of the Indian Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, underscoring his leadership in the field.
