• Dr. Perumal Karnan is a distinguished Pediatric Intensivist with over 24 years of intensive hands-on experience in managing the most complex and life-threatening pediatric conditions.
• He heads one of the most advanced multidisciplinary PICU programs in the region.
• His unit caters to a wide spectrum of critically ill children, including those recovering from liver and cardiac transplants, bone marrow procedures, neurosurgical interventions, burns, trauma, and complex post-operative cases.
• Dr. Karnan has expertise in paediatric echocardiography, flexible bronchoscopy, airway and ventilation management, extracorporeal life support (ECMO), pediatric transplant ICU care, and critical care-focused ultrasonography.
• His exposure includes high-volume paediatric liver transplantation, neurosurgical critical care, hematology-oncology emergencies, and complex septic shock, including meningococcal sepsis.
• Dr. Karnan began his medical journey with an MBBS and subsequent training in Paediatrics at Stanley Medical College, Chennai.
• His passion for pediatric critical care took him to the United Kingdom, where he received extensive specialist training at prestigious institutions such as King’s College Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, Royal London Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
• Dr. Karnan further trained in respiratory and retrieval services at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital and advanced cardiac ICU, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support, including Berlin Heart and LVAD support at the renowned Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
• He later obtained a prestigious fellowship in PICU from The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Toronto, Canada, one of the world's top pediatric centres.
• With a strong academic inclination, Dr. Karnan served as faculty in the UK, where he actively contributed to the medical curriculum, supervised trainees, developed structured academic modules, and guided clinical research.
• He has also conducted meaningful research on pediatric ECMO and developed a clinical scoring system using platelet count to assess the severity of meningococcal septicaemia, an impactful contribution to critical care decision-making.
