About Dr. N. Sekar

• Dr. N. Sekar is one of the senior-most vascular surgeons in India, with more than 46 years of experience in vascular and endovascular surgery.
• Over his career, Dr. Sekar has performed thousands of complex vascular surgeries, including limb salvage procedures for diabetic foot disease, aneurysm surgeries, dialysis access procedures, stroke prevention surgeries, and management of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
• He has developed mastery in surgical and minimally invasive endovascular procedures and has remained at the forefront of adopting innovative vascular techniques in India.
• He completed his MBBS from JIPMER, Pondicherry, in 1976, followed by MS in General Surgery from PGIMER, Chandigarh, in 1979.
• To further his specialization, Dr. Sekar pursued an MCh in Vascular Surgery from Madras Medical College in 1988.
• Widely regarded as a pioneer in his field, he became the first surgeon in the country to obtain an MCh in Vascular Surgery and the first to initiate endovascular surgical techniques in Tamil Nadu.
• Nearly all practicing vascular surgeons in Tamil Nadu today are his students, reflecting his tremendous role as a mentor and teacher.
• He went on to earn several prestigious qualifications and fellowships, including MNAMS, FICS, FRCS (Glasgow), Endovascular Fellowship at Royal Perth Hospital, Perth, Australia, and a Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Arizona. His contributions were further recognized with a DSc (Hon. Causa) from TN MGR Medical University.
• Dr. Sekar has been serving as Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospital since 2005, where he continues to provide advanced vascular care.
• He is also a teacher and examiner, with a reputation for training the next generation of vascular surgeons and raising the standard of vascular surgery education across the country.
• In addition to his clinical excellence, Dr. Sekar has contributed to various national and international publications, delivered lectures, and presented scientific work at global vascular forums.
• His efforts in advancing vascular surgery in India have earned him wide recognition both nationally and internationally.
• Dr. Sekar is an active member of leading medical societies, including the Vascular Society of India, European Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Society for Vascular Surgery (USA), Venous Association of India, International College of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow), National Academy of Medical Sciences, Diabetic Foot Society of India, and IACTS (Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons).
• His areas of expertise include management of peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot care, varicose veins, aneurysm surgery, renal transplantation, dialysis access surgery, and stroke prevention.
• Dr. Sekar has also performed head and neck tumor embolization, intra-arterial thrombolysis, and other advanced endovascular interventions.
