• Dr. Balaraman V is a distinguished nephrologist with over 34 years of experience spanning both the government and private healthcare sectors in Tamil Nadu.
• He completed his medical education and advanced renal specialization at the prestigious Madras Medical College, where he earned one of the most competitive DM seats in Nephrology in the state.
• His career began in government service as an Assistant Surgeon in 1997, and he later rose to become Assistant Professor and then Professor of Nephrology, heading the Nephrology Department at Kilpauk Medical College (KMC).
• During his tenure at KMC, Dr. Balaraman achieved a major clinical breakthrough by performing the institution’s first ABO-incompatible kidney transplant within the government sector and contributed to more than 70 successful kidney transplants.
• His efforts helped place KMC firmly on the renal transplant map of Chennai. Transitioning to leadership responsibilities, he also served as Medical Superintendent of KMC, gaining valuable hospital administration experience.
• Currently, Dr. Balaraman leads the Paediatric Nephrology Department at the Institute of Child Health (ICH), where he launched the prestigious pediatric renal transplant program and introduced advanced therapies such as Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) for newborns and infants, and the unique pediatric hemodiafiltration system, major milestones in paediatric renal care in Tamil Nadu.
• Dr. Balaraman has also been a key figure in private healthcare, spearheading advanced nephrology services at hospitals such as Kumaran Hospitals and Aysha Hospitals for nearly 18 years, successfully performing over 100 kidney transplants, including ABO-incompatible and cadaveric procedures, while overseeing high-volume dialysis services exceeding 1,500 cycles per month.
• At Chettinad Superspeciality Hospital, he leads a team of four nephrologists and has completed 40+ kidney transplants, even during challenging pandemic conditions, while managing more than 1200 dialysis cycles every month, including CRRT.
• He is also part of the core team that initiated pediatric kidney transplantation at Rainbow Hospitals, starting with a rare pediatric ABO-incompatible transplant, further strengthening his reputation as a pioneer in paediatric nephrology and renal transplantation in the region.
• Recognized as a clinician, teacher, and program builder, Dr. Balaraman is known for his expertise in complex transplant immunology, innovative renal replacement therapies, and critical kidney care in children.
